About the Aircraft

The first Japanese supersonic jet trainer aircraft, T-2 had been intended to be deployed to the support fighter.
The development of T-2 was started in 1967 and it went into the mass production in 1975.
The T-2 had been used for the fighter pilot training until 2004.

In October 1972, the deployment of the support fighter was approved at the National Defense Council and the development of T-2 based support fighter was finally started.
The #106 aircraft which was the 2nd mass-produced aircraft of T-2(59-5106) and the #107 aircraft which was the 3rd mass-produced aircraft (59-5107) were converted to the experimental aircraft for the development of support fighter to execute the various tests.
These aircrafts were the FS-T2 Kai which were the substantial experimental aircrafts of F-1 support fighter.
To modify the T-2 to the special specification aircraft, the rear seat was removed and the electronic devices were mounted, and also the metal cover was mounted inside of the canopy. FS-T2 Kai made its first flight in June 1975.
FS-T2 Kai had been used for the various tests for almost 2 years.

In November 1976, the permission to use it in the military unit was obtained and it was named F-1 which is its official name.
All the T-2 and the F-1 were retired in March 2006.
However, 2 FS-T2 Kai had been actively used until their retirement.
FS-T2 Kai connected the T-2 jet trainer aircraft and the F-1 fighter, and it certainly represented the T-2/F-1 family.
