About the Aircraft

Before the World War II, Japan put the focus on the air force development. The A5M was the first all-metal monoplane fighter to enter service with the Imperial Japanese Navy(IJN). The A5M was designed by Jiro Horikoshi, later responsible for the famous A6M Zero. After various changes such as adopting rivet to reduce drag, the A5M reached a maximum speed of 100 km/h and was ordered into production in 1936. The A5Ms (Allied reporting name Claude) remained in production until 1940, and was very active until the beginning of World War II.
The A6M Zero as the successor of A5Ms was developed by the team centered on Jiro Horikoshi, and ordered into service from 1939. Combining excellent maneuverability and long range, the A6M Zero (Allied reporting name Zeku) is considered to be the most capable carrier-based fighter in the world during the early World War II.
Among the many variants of A6M, the A6M2b type 21 was the folding wingtips model.
