About the Aircraft

The Viggen is a fighter aircraft developed independently by Sweden and operated from 1971 to 2005. Development started in 1961, and the first flight was successful in 1967. The first mass-produced type AJ37 went into operation in 1971. The Viggen was equipped with a canard on the left and right of the air intake and adopted a delta wing as the main wing. The engine was equipped with one JT8D-22 and demonstrated a maximum speed of Mach 2.1. It boasted STOL performance that enables takeoff and landing on short runways. In 2002, the AJS 37 Viggen of the 1st Squadron of the F10 Wing of the Swedish Air Force was repainted in red livery as a memorial to the dissolution of the wing. It was called "Red Viggen" and is still on display in the museum for the general public to see.
